Talking films Kunal Kapoor
He breezes into the room with a disarming smile. Lanky with perfectly chiselled features and a mop of dishevelled, curly hair, Kunal Kapoor looks every bit a Greek God. Within the hot heartthrob lies a child-like innocence which becomes apparent when
he starts talking, his speech laced with laughter. When asked about his upcoming projects, he says, “I am in the process of signing some stuff about which I can’t talk now because they are by some big production houses.” On further prodding he relents, but all he says is “Four films in two months”.
Earlier a part of Naseeruddin Shah’s theatre group, acting in films came to this good-looker after doing a stint as assistant to Rakeysh Mehra. “I started as an assistant director and while on the sets of Aks I found myself more on screen than behind it. You could see me moving around in the shots like a third person,” he laughs.
Talking about the films he’s acted in, he says, “I enjoyed doing Rang De Basanti, not just for the fact it won many awards but for the entire experience of being part of a big production.” He also enjoyed playing the role of the clumsy Vivaan in Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag and Imran in Aaja Nach Le. The 32-year-old says he likes playing a character that is far removed from him and has a different thought process and belief.
What’s the real Kunal like? “Different person on different days. I constantly like to grow and change.” His eyes light up at the mention of his acting experience with Madhuri Dixit in Aaja Nach Le.
Madhuri has always been his favourite actor; he couldn’t believe he was sharing screen space with her.
Since he started off as an assistant director, does he plan to direct movies later? “Yes, the desire to direct a movie will remain,” he replies beaming.
