Home, sweet home

People Juuso Tammilehto loves the spicy Andhra food

For Juuso Tammilehto of Finland everything is different in India. An IT professional working for TietoEnator — a 16,000-plus employee company operating in over 20 countries — he is here in Hyderabad as head of business development for his company’s mobile devices R&D business.

He feels Asia is culturally different from the Nordic countries. Having spent quite a few years in Beijing for work reasons, Juuso (pronounced Uso) says Hyderabad is certainly an easier place to live in. “I tend to compare Beijing and Hyderabad. Both the cities have a long history — significantly longer than ours. India is an easier place to live in as there is no language problem.”

Juuso says it is a great learning experience staying here. “It will be a greater experience if I learn Hindi,” he admits. The problems he faces in Hyderabad are the traffic, heat and dust. “Traffic is a real mess. I leave home before 8 a.m. and leave office before 6 p.m. or after 8 p.m. so that I don’t get caught in the traffic. There are a lot of things happening round the clock here — roads being laid, shops opening everyday. “It is a sign of growth and I consider it a privilege to witness the change and live through it.”

Having criss-crossed Hyderabad extensively, Juuso has jelled well with the city and its people and the culture. And he loves it too.

“People are loving, affectionate and helpful. I have a lot of friends here and certainly I will miss them when I go back home in 2010,” he says.

Surprised by the variety of cultures in the country, Juuso appreciates the traditions and history of the land and how people relish it. On the working pattern here, he says it is an easy environment.

“The work culture is totally different — but that’s the way it should be. This again is a great learning experience.”

When it comes to food, Juuso loves anything that is spicy. “And, of course, I get a lot here. The more spice, the more I love it. I love Andhra food,” he says.

Missing home? “Definitely yes. Though I am a single person and don’t have a family, I do miss my people. But now Hyderabad is my home, sweet home,” he says.
