Car and bike questions? We have the answers
|
My five-year-old Accent CRDi has recently started making a clicking sound. It seems to be coming from the wheels. The engine is also noisier than before. What could be the problem?
R Karthik
The sound is probably coming from the driveshafts (CV joints), which must be worn out. The best way to find out if this is the reason is to turn the wheel completely to one side and drive. If you still hear the sound then the driveshafts are the culprit. As for the engine noise, diesel engines do tend to get noisier with age. But you could get the fuel system cleaned and the injectors checked if the noise is bothering you. It will help somewhat.
I plan to buy an SUV or MUV and my budget is Rs 7-8.5 lakh. I have to travel around 7,000-9,000km/month on bad and good roads. I am looking for a vehicle which is fuel-efficient, reliable, comfortable to drive and low maintenance. I have shortlisted the Bolero, Scorpio, Tavera, Sumo and Safari. Please advise.
Shajahan
It appears that cost of ownership is your main priority, in which case we would recommend the Tavera, as it is more fuel-efficient than all the other MUVs and is also well-priced. It has also earned a reputation among taxi drivers for being reliable and easy on the pocket. The only downside is that the Tavera is just that — a taxi. It doesn’t have the prestige and status of say a Safari or a Scorpio. However, it might be worth waiting for the Tavera’s face-lift, which though essentially a cosmetic change, will include revamped interiors and a more upmarket look. We expect the new Tavera to be launched within the next two months or so.
I want to buy a car for between Rs 5-6 lakhs and have shortlisted the Swift Dzire ZXi and Logan 1.6gls. Could you give me a comparison of the two in terms of maintenance costs, ride, space, comfort, interiors and feat ures? I also want advice on which CNG kit to install in my car. My driving is about 90km daily, which includes a two-way commute on the Greater Noida highway.
Prohil Sinha
The two cars you have mentioned are actually quite different. If you want driving pleasure and refinement then the Dzire is the right car for you. The Logan is the more practical choice and is also a much more comfortable and spacious car, with a far better ride. Since you have a long daily commute, we think you will appreciate the ‘big-car’ feel of the Logan and hence would recommend it, but bear in mind that it is marginally less fuel-efficient and has the looks of a bread box.
