ROUND & ABOUT

Fan fare At Dasavatharam’s release

Bits and pieces from the reporters’ diary that could not make it to the main stories

Special darshan

Fans of Kamal Haasan didn’t really have to wait till Friday the 13th for the demi-god to present himself in ten avatars. The first paid darshan for the public began at the Rohini complex in Koyambedu at 9.40 p.m. on Thursday at a premium. The ticket was priced Rs.250 at the counter. But since it is a tradition to sell tickets for the first weekend only in black, each seat was sold at Rs.300. Know any piece of real estate where a square feet, for three hours of rental, costs more?

Sunday night jam

The cops on duty at a theatre complex had a nightmare of a weekend as fans showed up an hour before show-time to get their tickets. They pleaded with fans to park on the opposite side of the road and comeback later but they were clearly outnumbered. The black-ticket sellers sold the Rs. 75 ticket for Rs.150 at 9 p.m. By half past nine, the rate rocketed to Rs. 200 for seats closer to the screen. Ten minutes after that, there were no seats left. Though the gates opened at 10.15 p.m, scores of bikes tried to make their way to the parking lot trying to get ahead of the other because the show according to the ticket was to begin at 10.15. Who would’ve imagined a traffic jam inside a multiplex? It took twenty minutes for the jam to clear and the management pushed the show to 10.45 p.m. – nearly two hours after fans showed up in front of the hall to get their tickets.

Blog war

A critic friend from Mumbai asked me to check him out on the news. How did he make it to the news? He just had to critically review Sarkar Raj and the furious filmmaker decided to get back at him and other critics through his blog and soon, it was on the news. Amitabh Bachchan showed his support by publishing his director’s post on his blog too. Now, we are not sure if it was oversight or ignorance but RGV sort of thinks that “disparate” is bad spelling for “desperate”. Maybe it’s time Big B introduces RGV to the Thesaurus.

Pen please

I’ve never managed to figure this one out. You write an article, and readers call back asking for phone numbers of the people profiled. Ideally, they should be ready with pen and paper. But, no! Just as you start reeling off the number, you hear funny noises on the other end. The caller first discreetly asks someone to hand him a pen and paper, then gets a little frantic, and finally, the masterpiece. “Damn! This doesn’t work.” All this, while you hold on impatiently.

Fear of deadlines

At the live Phobia Cure programme, Praveen Sherman quizzed the audience about their phobias. When one of them said he feared “deadlines”, Praveen could not believe his ears. The NLP trainer had understood it as “dead lines”. He asked, “What harm can ‘dead lines’ do to you?”
