Fitness mantra

Useful tips for staying fit

Demo by Anju Ghei At VLCC in Coimbatore.

Our present lifestyle boasts of extensive luxury. With cars at our disposal and fast food joints to cater to every need of the palette, exercise features at the bottom of our priorities.

Lifestyle issues

The fitness workshop held by VLCC, Coimbatore, was well attended. It addressed the growing concern of obesity resulting from the current urban lifestyle and unhealthy food habits. Anju Ghei, Vice President Training- Slimming and Fitness at VLCC, a strikingly fit woman for a 47 year old pointed out that “Exercise is not only for the obese but should be a way of life to stay fit, healthy and productive.” She debunked the common perception that the slim need not exercise; however it is finally a tight, toned and taut body that is fit, not a slim one.

The two-hour session began with a pulse rate check to demonstrate how 80 per cent of the audience present was unfit. “If your objective is to lose weight, a walk in the morning, yoga or floor exercises cannot aid you to burn calories” said Dr. Ghei. A rigorous work out schedule with cardio- respiratory training, warm up and cooling down exercises is crucial. This however depends on your age, body type and medical condition. Between work and home most women don’t find time for themselves, let alone exercising. She recommended a couple of simple regimes which could help in burning out that excess, unwanted fat. These included skipping, going up and down a step, dancing and aerobics, all of which could burn fat without expensive equipment. “Right posture is essential,” emphasised Dr. Ghei.
