A winner at last

R. B. Choudhary is thrilled with the national Award for Keerthichakra

‘Keerthichakra,’ the Malayalam film that marked Major Ravi’s directorial debut, has won the National award in the best film on national integration category and its producer R.B. Choudhary is on cloud nine.

Supergood Films, his production house, has won several awards at the State levels, but this is the first time that national recognition has come its way.

“Major Ravi has served at the war front and so his story, treatment and the army sequences shot in Kashmir spelt authenticity,” he says.

Choudhary entered Malayalam cinema after a gap of 20 years, with ‘Keerthichakra.’

In Kerala, ‘Keerthichakra’ has already bagged eight awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Choudhary’s son Jeeva, who made his bow in Malayalam with the film. Recently Jeeva himself was surprised at his popularity in Palghat, where he had gone to attend a wedding.

“He couldn’t free himself from fans who had gathered around him that he missed the flight,” Choudhary narrates. “It’s thanks to ‘Keerthichakra’ for that’s the only Malayalam film he’s done so far.”

“It’s all the more gratifying because it has won both awards and rewards,” laughs Choudhary, because the film’s success had him laughing all the way to the bank too! The Tamil version, ‘Aran,’ wasn’t a success story though.

“We added some masala for ‘Aran.’ Also the voices in Hindi and Malayalam had to be dubbed in Tamil to make it easy for the audience. But we did no such thing for the Malayalam version. That’s why I could send ‘Keerthichakra’ for the competition,” he says.
