Vegan treats

The vegan food festival proved food can be tasty without harming our feathered and furry friends

Smooth as silk The tofu grilled to perfection does a tasty tango with litchi

All who think a delicious vegan food festival is an oxymoron, should try out Chef Ranjit Roy Choudhury’s concoctions for the vegan food festival presently on at Mynt at the Taj West End.

Vegan food, for those who came in late, is food that does not use any animal product — that includes milk and milk products apart from fish, meat and eggs. We started with two salads. The figs and baby spinach with orange perfumed poppy seed vinaigrette and tomato petals, tasted as healthy (in a nice way) as it sounds. The next salad had shredded chicken dressed with oregano. Before you think the fight is over almost before it started, let it be known that the chicken is faux. Made from tofu imported from Singapore, the mock meat tastes so much like the real thing that it is uncanny.

The soups rocked. While the chilled avocado with a kiss of Tabasco needed some getting used to, the cock-a-leekie was heart warming. The potato, onion and leek did a jolly tango as they sped smooth as silk.

The main course perfectly complimented the advance guard. There was the most delicious tofu with litchi and honey (hmmm, not quite vegan I guess). And the belle de ball, sweet potato cakes, baked, mind you, with roasted beans and a vegan cocktail sauce.

Desserts, chef said were a challenge as everything either uses milk or eggs or ghee. But nothing can stop the dauntless chef Ranjit and he served as a divine fresh mango Soya cream with a whiff of oregano. It was the sweetest, lightest end note.

The Vegan food festival is on at Mynt, Taj West End till June 28. For reservations call 66605660.
