Take two, after two years

Gowri Munjal is back, this time as Charmme’s sibling in a new film

After a hiatus There is no time for boyfriends

I didn’t sit at home twiddling my thumbs,” informs Gowri Munjal, explaining her absence from the industry for some time. She has surfaced after two years — her last film being Gopi - goda meedha pilli. The charming and chirpy actor didn’t waste a minute post Bunny. She chose to work in Kannada films, one with Punit Raj Kumar and the other, which was a remake of Murari. There was also Gandana Mane with Sivaraj Kumar which fetched her rave reviews and her career took off from there. Gowri spread her wings to the Tamil movie industry as well and her first film was directed by P. Vasu.

“I never chose to be in a rush, if I wanted I could have signed many inane projects but then I had made up mind that the few years in the industry should be worth remembering, I don’t want to make any wrong moves because one bad film and you are finished,” says the actress. She wants to spend quality time with her family and refuses to tag her mother with her on the sets. “It’s a misconception that the film industry is a tough place for women. If you take that one wrong step, you can land in trouble even in the vicinity of your home,” she says.

Gowri is one of the best liked actresses of her generation, a friendly, determinedly down-to-earth young woman who hangs out with old friends from school, and, unlike most of her co-stars, allows her hairdresser to sleep in her room and treats her like a family member. Is she not interested in Hindi films? She says, “I’m yet to make my debut in Malayalam films, let me finish this one thing and I will think about it. Gowri and Charmme play siblings in Suresh Productions’ Kausalya Supraja Rama in which she plays Kausalya. She is also working in a remake of Kannada film Rishi with Jagapati Babu and Shashank. Also on the anvil is a Tamil and a Kannada film. She has also inspired her sister Shieva, who is just a year older than her to get into movies. How different is she from her sister? Gowri replies, “I am the ‘prim and propah’ girl, who’s into clothes, jewellery and cooking. But my sister can just about make chai and cook noodles.” Of late the actress has shed many pounds and is glowing, is she heading for size zero? No, screams Gowri. She says, “I believe in being fit and healthy, I carry my own luggage, I go for a walk and when I am feeling plump, cut down on rice and sweets.” Finally has she been dating someone? The actress is quick to reply, “There is no time to even miss having boyfriends. But I would love to meet someone who is not from the industry, who is polished and open minded.” “Am I asking for too much?” she asks before leaving.
