Meet Kunal Nayyar, the new Indian on American television

I knew this is what I had to do,” confides Kunal Nayyar, actor and theatre artiste. Kunal Nayyar is the latest Indian face on American television. He is known for his role as the nerdy and socially-neurotic Rajesh Koothrappali on the CBS sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. The show is an American situation comedy, about two socially inept prodigies in their 20s. Talking about his character, he says, “My character is really funny but still very adapted to the normal lifestyle. It’s really fun and very interesting.”
Recently, Nayyar teamed up with fellow Indian, Oroon Das, to write the critically acclaimed play, “Cotton Candy”, which is still running in New Delhi. While his role on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory is his first as a TV regular, Kunal has previously guest starred in the CBS drama Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) in Suspicion (Season 4) where he played a terrorist, Youssef Zidan.
Also, Nayyar is currently writing his first feature film. Not really delving into the details, he says, “The film is about an Indian guy going to America. There he looks for the three basic necessities in a man’s life: work, love and friendship. The story is very much related to my life.”
Talking about his personal life, Nayyar, who was born and brought up in Delhi, says his growing up years were extremely wonderful and enthusiastic. “I did my schooling from St. Columba’s and had loads of fun there. I used to play badminton and chase girls. I spent my time like a normal teenager would, hanging around with friends, going for movies, lunch, etc. Delhi, definitely is the most rocking place,” gushes Kunal.
