Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I am looking for a luxury saloon costing up to Rs. 20 lakh. I have short-listed Honda Accord and Skoda Laura. I like the Accord but the Laura with its diesel engine appeals more to me. I also like the DSG gearbox. Is it a reliable car, and does it have a good resale value?

Varun Sood

The Laura is a good choice, as it is safe, well-equipped and has a good resale value. Skoda might not give you service that is as good as Honda’s, but we still advise you to go for the Laura. Alternatively, you could look at the Hyundai Sonata Embera CRDi. It is an excellent highway car and is available with either a manual gearbox or an automatic one. It may not have cool features or the awesome DSG gearbox as the Laura, but it makes a good luxury diesel car.

My budget is Rs. 6.5 lakh and my annual running is 13,000km. I am confused between Ford Fusion and the Mahindra-Renault Logan. I am looking at maintenance, economy, safety, road dynamics and long-term value for money? Should I go for a diesel or a petrol version?

Atul

Go for the Fusion petrol. The Logan is a solid car but lacks the refinement of the Fusion. The Ford is decent on luggage space, has good ground clearance to tackle bad roads and for your usage, the petrol gives good enough mileage and is exciting to drive.

I want a rough and tough off road car and I am looking at the Gypsy and the Mahindra Invader. Which is better?

Gurpreet

The Gypsy is the one you should buy. Though it is a petrol, which means higher running costs, nothing comes close to it in terms of off-road prowess. It is also silent and reliable. The Gypsy has bouncy suspension which can be tiresome on normal roads. The Invader being a diesel has more torque at low rpm though quality levels leave much to be desired.

I am looking at a spacious seven-seater with good quality and reliabilty. The Innova looks like a good deal but I think it might be too big to drive in the city. How is the Scorpio? Also, how is the after-sales servic e of the Innova?

Ramesh C

Considering your needs, the Innova is the one we would recommend. It has massive space for passengers and luggage, and is reliable too. It might look like a handful to drive in the city, but it is nothing that you cannot get used to and the service is good as well. The Scorpio will not offer you the comfort and quality of the Innova.

I own a Honda City and want to buy a second car to run in the city. It will be driven by my wife so I need a small car that is easy to drive and park. Quality is my main concern and the car should have good features. My budget is around 4.5 lakh. Which car would you suggest?

P Rao

The Hyundai i10 is the car for your wife. It has a fresh design and runs on the proven underpinnings of the Santro. It is an excellent city car and the quality of the interiors is a notch above than that of any other small car. It is loaded with features and fits your budget well.
