Unwind in June

June Rock Out is back again with a line-up of 14 bands

MEGA BLAST A band performs at June Rock Out

June Rock Out returns this year with a new name. As the Unwind Center’s annual rock show completes its tenth year, it is called “JRO to the power of 10”. Unwind celebrates a decade of JRO by organising a day’s stay in Mahabali puram for all the outstation bands, with support from Hi-Tours, a tour company based in the sea town.

JRO (to the power 10) with take place on two successive Saturdays (June 28 and July 5, from 4 p.m. onwards) at KRMM Hall (Kumara Rani Meena Muthiah Hall), which is behind the Gandhinagar Lady’s Club. Of the 14 bands participating in the event, one (Gandhi’s Cookbook) is from Dubai.

The band line-up for the two days: On June 28 – Blind Image (Chennai), Dream Out Loud (Mumbai), The Hobbs (Kolkata), Lounge Piranha (Bangalore), Seven Days (Chennai), Blood & Iron (Chennai) and Substance (Chennai). On July 5 – Lionel Mascarenhas (Mumbai), Ahimxa (Assam), Gandhi’s Cookbook (Dubai), Grey Shack (Chennai), Silver (Pune), Pipers (Bangalore) and Slain (Bangalore).

The bands were selected on the basis of the demos they sent in. Fifty-five bands from various places, including Norway, Mumbai, Cochin, Nepal, Kolkatta, Delhi and Bangalore, wanted to part of this show. The bands were selected on the basis of stage presence, quality of their compositions and vision for the future.

JRO is only a performance stage for rock musicians, not a competition. However, there is the ‘Leon Ireland Outstanding Vocalist Award’ to be given away. By instituting this award, Unwind pays a tribute to the Moksha vocalist who passed away on December 18, 2006.

On the sidelines of the rock event, there will be body painting, food and photo stalls, water balloon smashing contests and other entertainment.

Passes are available at Fruit Shop, Landmark and Unwind Center. For information, call 98413 79494/ 65379572 or log onto myspace.com/junerockout and Online Communities on Facebook and Orkut.
