Twinkle toe Gayathri Govind
Gayathri Govind is twinkle-toed. In fact she proved she does not have two left feet in Asianet’s ‘Thakadhimi.’ The dancing lass, is on seventh heaven having won the title and hefty prize money. Says an exuberant Gayathri: “I h
ave so many people to thank that I do not know where to start.”
Dance, dance
Having started dancing from the age of three, Gayathri says she was always interested in learning various Indian dance forms.
“Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Ottanthullal, Kathakali, Kathak… I have studied most of the dance forms. There is something enchanting about movements and expressions of these dances,” says Gayathri who learnt the dances under various teachers.
An engineering student of Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram-based Gayathri says it was tough balancing the show and her studies. However, supportive parents and teachers helped.
Choreography
“My father would help me select a song and costume for my performance. All I had to do was choreograph the piece,” says Gayathri, who choreographed the dance pieces herself. “In fact, the judges- Laksmi Gopalaswamy, Vineeth and Gopika Varma, were impressed that I did the choreography myself.”
According to Gayathri she would spend six hours a day rehearsing the dance steps, “mostly at night, as it is calm and there is less chance for any interruption.” And so the young danseuse performed Kathak, folk dance, Otthanthullal and Bharatanatyam to name a few, set to popular tunes.
“I just went on stage and had fun. I love dancing and dance for the love of it. I tried to be different with each performance.”
Ask her whether she eyes a career in the mini or big screen and she says: “Actually I’d rather do the choreography for their songs. That way I can do what I love the most: dancing.”
