Laughter time Vaiyapuri
Vaiyapuri’s counterparts Vivek and Vadivelu have donned the mantle of heroes. But he is endeared to the idea of attempting the role of a villain.
Ask him whether he would win people’s acceptance doing such a role and pat comes the reply: “It is not the physique that matters while playing a villain. How well you slip into the role matters the most. Take for instance Nagesh sir, who performed the negative role in ‘Aboorva Sagodaragal’ to perfection,” he reasons out.
As a fan
A die-hard fan of Nagesh, Vaiyapuri says the veteran’s slapstick style of humour in the film “Magalir Mattum,” is evergreen. At present busy with his latest assignment, Arjun-starrer “Tiruvannamalai,” Vaiyapuri, who has done more than 150 films, believes that humour track in the movies grabs the instant attention of the fans. “I have played hero’s friend in most of my movies. Though the role has been the same, I make it a point to instil some variety in my comedy. That might be the reason why directors are not tired of casting me in similar roles,” he beams.
He feels that to stay put in the industry one needs to be part of successful movies. “I might have performed to my best. But if the movie fails at the box-office the entire effort goes waste. An actor’s success, nine out of ten times, depends on the success of the movie in which he performs.”
Vaiyapuri considers himself lucky to be part of the magnum opus “Dasavatharam”, and says he is thankful to Kamal Haasan for giving him the opportunity.
New experience
“I have done nine films with Kamal and every time it has been a new experience. He has a great sense of humour and gives ample opportunities for his co-artistes to perform. I have cherished every moment of our association,” he says, revealing that he will be working with Kamal in “Marma Yogi” as well.
Vaiyapuri’s next big release will be “Kuselan”, and is something special for him as well. For, he will be sharing the screen space with Rajnikanth for the first time.
“It has been quite a long wait, and it is worth it. I play a music director in the film. Just like the Superstar’s ardent fans, I am also waiting for the movie’s release,” he says. Another dream, which Vaiyapuri has been nurturing for long is doing a character role. And that is set to turn into a reality soon in the forthcoming flick “Villu.” “In ‘Villu’ I am doing an interesting character role, which also has ample scope for humour. I believe the role will take me to the next level,” Vaiyapuri oozes confidence.
