A festival of contemporary Korean cinema from July 8



INTRIGUING PLOT From “Maundy Thursday”

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea, New Delhi, InKo Centre, Chennai and the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation organise a festival of contemporary Korean cinema at the South Indian Film Chamber Theatre, 606, Anna Salai from July 8 to 11.

The festival starts with “Secret Sunshine”, on July 8, 6.15 p.m. The story is about a widow Shin Ae and her son Jun who move to a small town Milyang (which translates as “secret sunshine”) where her husband was born. Opening a piano school with the help of a local, Jong Chan, she tries to rebuild her life. Does she succeed? “Maundy Thursday” will be screened on July 9, 6.15 p.m. Young college professor Yu-jeong attempts suicide, alienating her from her highly religious family. However, she spends time with her aunt, Sister Monica, a Catholic nun in a prison. Yu becomes intrigued by one of Monica’s charges, a death row prisoner…

On July 10 “For Horowitz” will be screened at 6.15 p.m. Kim Ji-su is a 31-year-old single woman who wants to become a famous pianist like Horowitz. Her dream is shattered but she continues being a piano teacher. One day, she discovers a young boy Gyung-min, a musical genius. She starts teaching him, preparing him for a competition. What happens?

At 8 p.m., the same evening, “Highway Star” will be screened. Dal-ho is the lead singer of a heavy metal band in a small town in Korea. A somewhat desperate owner and manager of a small record label in Seoul visit the nightclub where Dal-ho’s band is rehearsing. They listen to Dal-ho sing and become convinced that Dal-ho has what it takes to become a star. They follow him to a restaurant and offer him a recording contract. Dal-ho accepts, but… On July 11, 6.15 p.m., “Solace” will be screened. In-ku owns a pharmacy and takes care of his mentally disabled brother. He is all set for marriage but his fiance’s parents refuse to allow it because of his brother. Hye-ran runs a small retail booth in a shopping centre.When her father passes away, he leaves her saddled with large debts. In-Ku and Hye-Ran meet and find solace in each other’s company. They grow closer to each other…

In “Radio Star” which will be screened at 8 p.m., the same evening, Choi Gon is a star in the 80s, with many hits to his credit. But the music scene changes in the next 15 years, and he now realises his superstar days are over. For more details, contact 98401 51956 or 2436 1224.
