Over the past few years, reality television has managed to capture eyeballs and a plethora of reality shows has invaded our television sets.
Right from the innovative “Roadies” episodes to the inane dance-song routines, reality television shows seem to have proliferated all aspects of the couch potato’s life.
Recently, a girl went into depression after being scolded by judges for not performing up to potential in a popular show on a Bengali channel. Metroplus asked city residents whether these shows serve a purpose or have they overstayed their welcome.
Most felt that the debate had both positive and negative aspects. They said that though reality television shows have managed to bring to fore good talent, the massive commercialisation and competition has left a bitter aftertaste.
Many have called for a regulator authority that ensures that these shows are conducted in a proper manner and ensure that onstage issues are not carried off stage as well. People also appealed to the judges of these competitions to temper their responses and not treat contestants rudely. We sample some of the responses
Reality shows have become an excuse for egoistic judges and channels to make some money and garner higher TRP. The judges do not realise that the difference in age and experience and often berate the contestants unnecessarily. It has become a sham.

Reality shows had started as a good concept. However, they have now degenerated into an exercise to capture TRP ratings by the channels. Judges in many of these shows are extremely rude to the contestants and make attempts to satisfy their egos.

Such incidents are indeed tragic. The fault actually lies with the parents and the judges, who hype up the performances on one day and lambaste it the other day. Parents also put unrealistic pressure on their children, leading to such problems.

Reality shows are a mixed bag. They manage to discover and hone good talent, but also place too much pressure on some contestants. Some of the judges are very rude. Being scolded on television could lower the self confidence of the contestants.
