Meticulous Down to earth personality

Pushpa Kandasamy believes the entry of corporates into film production will raise the levels of professionalism in the industry.

Daughter of veteran director K. Balachander, Ms. Pushpa says their production house Kavithalaya might look at the option of tying up with corporates in the near future.

“Corporates have started to look at the creative aspect of movie making these days and an experienced producer can provide guidance. I think it is beneficial for both,” she opines.

Kavithalaya at present is producing two films — Arjun-starrer ‘Tiruvannamalai’ and Jeevan-starrer ‘Krishna Leelai.’ Its joint venture with Seven Arts, the much-awaited ‘Kuselan,’ will hit the silver screens shortly.

Successful

Ms. Pushpa, one of the successful woman film producers in Kollywood, makes it a point to visit shooting spots, even if it is in remote places. “The movie is our baby and we have to take care of it. Also I can address problems faced by the film crew at the location instantly. But I never interfere in the director’s work,” she explains.

Ms. Puspha says their in-house team takes its time before approving a storyline, since the expectations of the people are high when it comes to films produced by Kavithalaya. “Selecting a subject is not an easy task, given the varying taste of the audience. Our team members hold long discussions and it’s a lengthy exercise. But my father has the final say.”

On their current projects, Ms. Puspha says that the ventures are shaping up very well. “We have an excellent team, for both the films, ably headed by directors Perarasu (‘Tiruvannamalai’) and Selvan (‘Krishna Leelai’). We have lot of faith in their abilities and I am sure they would deliver the goods,” she says.

Remake

On ‘Kuselan,’ the remake of Malayalam hit ‘Katha Parayumpol,’ Ms. Pushpa says the film would live up to the expectations of the ardent Rajnikanth fans.

“Rajni is one person who values friendship in real life. And the story of the film is all about the friendship between a village barber, played by Pasupathy and a cine star (Rajnikanth). We are very happy to be part of the project,” she says.

Revealing her interest for making more films, Ms. Pushpa says that Kavithalaya has planned to produce six films a year, without compromising on the quality. That’s good news for cine buffs.
