Beat it The crowd swaying hips and the three DJs who made it happen
Weekend was aeons away but this Wednesday, the frontage of Bottles & Chimneys resembled one. Valet attendants struggled to cope with the vehicles and the Bouncers likewise with the shrieking young crowd at the entrance.
Meanwhile, Paul Jackson and Paul Deighton, two of the top DJs of the London-based Ministry of Sound, were sitting in the dressing room. “Our equipment is no different from those of others. It’s just what you do with it,” said Paul Jackson. “You’ve got to find your own subtleties, nuances and create your own atmosphere by watching people on the dance floor,” he added.
Few in the waiting multitude in the portico of B&C had actually seen a performance of Jackson and Deighton before. But yes, we have heard of them, said Madhuresh, Kapil and Hemant. “We want to rock with them!” exclaimed Anirudh, Omar, Nitish and Aditi.
“We’re not playing Rock. But they’ll rock all right,” promised Jackson and Deighton, back upstairs as the two Britons got up to walk into the DJ console placed 15 feet high. 9.45 pm - Moving headlights picked up tattooed soft forearms and deep necklines. Laser lights scythed through irregular columns of cigarette smoke and bounced off jiving hips. Bartenders in smart waistcoats displayed their flair in juggling bottles and harmless fire shows on the bar counters. By 10.30 p.m. the whole of ground floor as well as the first floor private enclosure of the pub had totally filled. About 30 odd people outside with valid passes of Rs. 2000 failed to gain entry.
Inside, the party rose to the promised crescendo as the Club and House genre of music by the two DJs powered the evening with 15,000 watts sound. They danced in as much space the floor would allow.
“The rhythm is at 128-130 beats per minute which is funky i.e. just right for dancing,” pointed out DJ Anand. “More than 135 bpm and you get into the trance type of music,” he added. “You need to be doped to listen to trance,” he suggested helpfully.
Let’s stick to funky music in that case.
