My First Break
How it happened
I started singing in different competitions from the age of four. The first one I participated in was ‘Nehru Bal Mela’ in New Delhi (where we were staying) and I won the first prize. The urge to win prizes continued right through my college days. I got my first break through an advertisement film for which I sang in 14 languages. Then I did a jingle for Idhayam oil enacted by Jyotika. The ad became popular. It was then I got a chance from Harris Jayaraj to sing in films — the song was “Etho Ondru” in Lesa Lesa.
How it felt
Though singing was not new to me, singing for films was different and a little difficult too. One must know the situation of the song and give the necessary feeling to it. With the help of Harris Jayaraj, producer Vikram Singh and the director, I was able to sing the song distinctly. After the recording, there was a gala audio release function. I was seated next to Trisha, for whom too it was the first film. The next day, all the newspapers carried our photograph. It was a big publicity boost for me.
How life changed
From the first song itself, I became popular. People started talking about my songs and I was invited to various functions and judge competitions. So far I have sung nearly 70 songs in three languages, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. Mostly I have rendered fast numbers such as ‘Kalayanamthan Kattikittu’ and ‘China Veeda Varattuma’; I would like to sing more melodies. My only desire now is to sing for the two living legends, Ilayaraja and A.R.Rahman.
