Big screen beckons MTV VJ Rannvijay has bagged plum projects
He was restless. Couldn’t stand straight for a minute. Kept fiddling with the football. With a pierced eyebrow and a cool dude attitude MTV VJ Rannvijay Singh Sangha lived up to his image to the hilt. The popular VJ who hosts the reality show “Roadies” on MTV was in town recently to attend the grand Finale of the “Finger Football” with fans at Adidas store. Rannvijay took the plunge into showbiz by participating in and winning the first season of Roadies in 2002. He has been hosting the show ever since. Now, he has taken another leap into the world of Hindi cinema. The VJ-turned-actor’s first film “Mumbai Cutting…A City Unfolds” is already doing the rounds in world’s major film festivals and has bagged a few awards too. The experimental film will be the closing film of 10th Osian’s Cinefan’s film festival of Asian and Aran cinema to be held from July 10 to July 20 in Delhi.
The film has ten 10-minute short films made by 11 directors including Sudhir Mishra, Anurag Kashyap, Kundan Shah, Revathy, Shashank Ghosh, Rituparno Ghosh and Ayush Raina. Each film revolves around Mumbai. Rannvijay features in Shashank Ghosh’s interpretation of Mumbai titled “10 minutes”.
The good-looking VJ will also be seen in “Toss” which also features Ashmit Patel, Aarti Chhabria and others.
“In the film I play the role of Ryan, a beach bum who believes in destiny and not hard work. It is about a bunch of friends and the bond they share. So everyone will be able to relate to it,” says Rannvijay. The shooting is complete and the film is expected to release in August. He also has a Mahesh Manjrekar’s film in hand where he would be playing ‘a strong character shown as a cool college hunk’. Add his new romance-based reality show “Spitsvilla” on MTV and boy, he has his hands full.
“I am just in the middle of so many things. I haven’t taken a day off for months. It gets stressful and confusing but I am working towards making Rannvijay a brand. MTV’s ‘Roadies’ is a huge platform but Bollywood is even bigger. And I want to make it big wherever I am. MTV is my bread and films are my butter,” says Rannvijay who doesn’t plan to cut down on veejaying.
Joining Indian army is a tradition in his family and Rannvijay too like his father, grandfather had planned to join the defence service.
“People ask me if you regret not joining army but how is that possible. I haven’t lived that life. Also, 30 years down the line, I didn’t want to think ‘oh what if I had joined the films. I am happy,” says Rannvijay.
He is also passionate about adventure sports. And how does he rate himself as an actor?
“I am very filmi guy that’s why I chose to be a VJ. Joining films was the next logical step. I am very natural in front of camera. I am trying not to do roles of cool dude, stud, DJ which are usually offered to me,” says the VJ-turned-actor.
