He keeps his distance from the in-laws, his and mine. Inclined to call a spade a spade, he does not mince words when his relatives don’t measure up to his standards. His attitude has caused some of them to become estranged from him. Today, they find it easier to talk to me. He expects me to be just as harsh with my relatives when they are in the wrong. My failure to do so has not gone down well with him. I adjust to my in-laws too, but this quality is, in his eyes, a failing. He believes that a family does better when it is free of outside interferences.

When we announced we were getting married, there were voices of dissent. There was a serious rift between my father and mother over the issue. The reason was simple: we came from different communities. If we had worried then that some relatives would be hurt, we would not be man and wife today. A family that sets its own rules stays healthy. I am not averse to the company of relatives. In moderation, it is fine. When they begin to poke their noses into my life and tell me how I should bring up my children and run my business, they are not welcome. I am closer to my friends than my relatives, because the former know they can’t cross certain boundaries. In contrast, relatives are not even aware that such boundaries exist.
