California dreaming

Ferrari’s California roadster is an attempt to appeal to all

Ferrari has released the first official pictures of the new California roadster. Ferrari will reveal details about the car step-by-step on a dedicated website, www.ferraricalifornia.com. The new car is unmistakably Ferrari, with a strong family resemblance, especially the round tail lamps and the simple grille. A bonnet scoop, side gills and vertically stacked exhausts are details intended to make the California distinctive to the other fillies in its stable. The California will be powered by an all-new 4.3-litre V8, mounted longitudinally in the front, the first time Ferrari has used such a configuration with a V8. Power is ‘adequate’ and Ferrari claims the car will get to 100kph in 4 seconds. Top speed should nudge 300kph. The party trick, especially for Beverly Hills boulevard brat pack, will be the folding hard-top, another first for Ferrari. The California is a distinct shift in the company’s focus; acknowledging the fact that it needs to make cars which appeal to a wider audience. The California will retain all the Ferrari essentials of sex, sauce and sprinting ability, but will be a softer, less hardcore drive.
