Kaju mithai
Nathu’s Sweets
Bengalimal Market,
New Delhi
Think of Delhi’s grimy summer and think of mithai…What do you get? Anxious moments while you check if the milk sweets have gone sour in transport. You can’t change the climate, and Delhi can’t stop eating sweets. The best bet is sweets made from cashew nuts — the well known kaju barfi. And at Nathu’s in Bengali Market, located right at the head of Tansen Marg that leads from the Mandi House roundabout practically right into the famous sweet shop, customers make a beeline for the kaju sweets. But, like everything in Delhi, even the kaju barfi has changed. Rather, it has metamorphosed into a number of different shapes and sizes: Kaju roll, kaju kalash, kaju tarbooz, to name a few.
Remember India’s traditional digestive, the paan? There is even a kaju paan, but rest assured, it is not likely to have the same effect as its leafy namesake. The looks, though could fool you.
Some of the kaju sweets have, some of them are discreetly off-white, with just a touch of silver foil. But all of them are enticingly bite size, temptingly soft and deceptively light!
Price: Rs.440 to 520 per kg
Bottomline: It is as auspicious as the traditional milk-based mithai but has a longer life in the heat
