Epic Scale The cast and crew of “Karna, Warrior of the Sun”
The figure of Karna from the Mahabharata has inspired and impressed generations. “Karna, Warrior of the Sun”, a play written by Farukh Dhondy, directed by Rudradeep Chakravarti, is set to burn the stage at the end of the month.
“I am Karna”, says Nisar Khan introducing himself. He doesn’t only mean that he’s playing the role of Karna. He elaborates, “Yes, I think the struggle I had to face in my acting career and in trying to create my identity has helped me relate to Karna of the Mahabharata. I can identify with his integrity, courage, complexes and inner fights.” An NSD graduate, Nisar has also worked in movies like Haasil, Abhay, Lakshya and Don. Playing the familiar Karna, he is confident the audience will find a refreshing change because of director Rudradeep Chakravarti’s direction and the innovative light design. .
Asked about the Computer Generated Images (CGI) technique that is going to be used for the first time in India, Nisar says, “It’s an innovative approach. My inner focus however would be on acting, we have been practising with it and it wouldn’t deviate our attention.” Shivani Wazir, co-producer who is playing the role of Draupadi, has given much of her time to the research for the project. She has also been dancing and exercising to perfectly fit the role of the woman who plays a vital role in shaping Karna’s destiny. “Mythology has so much one can learn from, I am able to relate with my character at almost all levels,” says Shivani who wants to keep the computer graphics details a surprise but expresses her optimism over the technique.
With the show still a few weeks away, interest has been stirred by the graphics that are to be used in it. “When you communicate to the computer savvy youth of today, it ought to be in their language and format and it is equally important to bring them close to our culture, our epics,” says Varsha Bedi, the producer.
