Another automobile magazine hits the market
|
Success may or may not have many fathers but it certainly breeds many offspring. For instance, the recent automobile boom in India is having more consequences than initially imagined. Of course, there is a greater demand for cars and bikes and more variety to choose from for people who often in the past had only Ambassadors and Fiats to decide between. But there is another consequence: greater awareness about automobiles, and an increase in demand for automobile magazines and books too. Helping people keep abreast of the latest in the automobile segment are now specialised, niche market magazines like Auto Car and Overdrive, not to forget Classic Wheels, which caters to vintage car lovers. Adding to the bandwagon is yet another magazine, Auto Bild, launched recently in New Delhi
Tutu Dhawan, an automobile expert, speaking at the launch event, mulled over the reason behind their origin, “A combination of automobile connoisseurs and prospective buyers keep such magazines floating.”
Media baron Aroon Purie commented, “We had only two-and-a-half choices to make, like Ambassador, Fiat and a little bit of Herald.” By little bit he meant there were very few who knew about the Herald. This is where these specialised magazines come in. They help auto enthusiasts keep abreast of the latest in the segment. Diljeet Titus, a vintage car expert, pointed out at the event, “Like the automobile market, the automobile magazine market is also segmented. There is niche readership for each magazine.”
A fortnightly
Incidentally, the new magazine will have 100 pages claiming to give complete information on the latest in the field. Priced at Rs.40, it will be a fortnightly affair with specialised articles guiding prospective buyers and explaining the technical details to the experts. Dhawan, however, cautioned, “There are some magazines which are just running because they are there; they are not making any money from it.”
