Gearing up for rains

Safety measures

Gone are the days when we used to prepare ourselves for rains. Thanks to global warming, these days we can’t expect rain. Still the government is taking precautions to save the rainwater. Taking safety measures could be helpful in saving the lives of many people.

Avoid water contamination

Rainy season brings with it a plethora of ailments and diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, hepatitis, malaria, typhoid, which occur due to water contamination. However, one can strive to stay healthy by drinking boiled water, avoiding junk food and being cautious while walking on the roads.

A waterproof bag for carrying important documents, the mobile phone etc should be kept handy. An umbrella should be in the list of must-carry things. Avoiding cotton clothes can also be a help.

One should try wearing synthetic clothes, which absorb less water and also get dried soon.

Rechargeable lights

We must gear ourselves up with rechargeable lights as there will be power cuts. We should also have a supply of blankets and soups to save ourselves from the accompanying chills. Motorists should have a raincoat to save themselves from the onslaught of a heavy downpour. We should also And drive with utmost care so as not to lose balance on slippery roads.

No water accumulation

The public should immediately identify the waterlogged places and inform the municipal corporation for getting them repaired. We must ensure that rainwater gets soaked into the rain pits already provided in several flats. Water accumulation should be avoided as it can lead to mosquitoes proliferating there. The GHMC should desilt the roadside canals to enable the rainwater to flow into underground drainage system. Motorists should drive carefully and see to it that water is not thrown on pedestrians. or those travelling in vehicles.

Drains locked tight

All drains should be locked tight. I still agonise over the death of a child who got washed away in an open drain. If possible, postpone all engagements during heavy rains. In a lighter vein, we can let the traffic police have colourful umbrellas that can be fixed to their heads. It is a great experience to visit green locations while the city is experiencing showers.
