TOPPING CHARTS Dhruv and Ashutosh: ‘Some of the bands that perform in Bangalore are among the best in the business’
“Our aim is to ensure that even the lesser-known forms of music are popularised and get a standing in popular culture,” say Dhruv and Ashutosh, composers of the recently-launched album Smoke Signals and co-founders of Blue Frog, a music company. They are at ease talking about their present and upcoming projects.
Ashutosh says: “We started Blue Frog in collaboration with some like-minded people to create a platform where music has not received adequate representation. We have not picked up any specific genre.” He adds: “Smoke Signals is different from our earlier albums. It is an eclectic mix comprising many musical styles and instruments. It ranges from hip songs like ‘summertime rocks’ to serious melodies. There are Bengali and North eastern folk songs, which have been fine-tuned a bit.”
He adds: “This is one of the first albums we have created. We have been involved in a number of film songs and albums. This was a completely new experience.” Ask them if they have sung all songs in the album, Dhruv says, “No way, the album was created in collaboration with nearly nine singers, including Kailash Kher. We were mainly composing the songs and creating the music track. It is basically a composer’s album.”
What about a video CD version of the music album. Ashutosh says: “One of our songs, ‘Summertime Rocks’ has been made into an animation song. It has been quite popular.” About their target audience, Dhruv smiles, “One of the reasons we incorporated an amalgam of music styles was to ensure that the album caters to the musical tastes of a cross section of the populace including the youth, the middle aged and the old.”
About Blue Frog, the duo said, “It is a very new company. It was set up nearly six months ago. We plan to move into the recording market soon and market our own albums under our label. The response has been good so far. The sales have started to pick up and we are receiving more orders. We have been quite happy with the response.”
The duo said they also plan to scout for good talent across the country. “Bangalore has an active band scene. Some of the bands that perform in Bangalore are among the best in the business. Any person who thinks he has a good voice could audition at our studios in Mumbai. We are always on the lookout for new talent.”
