Slice of Sri Lanka
To commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and Sri Lanka, a Sri Lankan film festival will be held from July 21 to 24 at the South Indian Film Chamber Theatre.
The festival is being organised by the Sri Lankan High Commissioner, Chennai, Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation and Madras Film Society in association with the Federation of Film Societies of India.
The films to be screened include “Sakman Maluwa” (The Garden), “Sudu Sevaneli” (Shadows of White), “Sooriya Arana”, “Theertha Yathra” and “Gamperaliya”.
The last film to be screened at 8 p.m. on July 24 is directed by James Lester Peries and got the Best Film Ranamayura Golden Peacock Award. Realism entered Sri Lankan cinema with “Gamperaliya” as it did in Sinhala literature when the novel was first published in 1943. “Gamperaliya” is considered the work that introduced cinema as a serious art form to Sri Lankans. This film was also selected as the best in Sri Lanka’s first 50 years of cinema.
The festival will be inaugurated by P. M. Amza, Deputy High Commisoner for Sri Lanka in Southern India.
