Weaving stories

Pretty pictures Fabric and thread are used the way a painter uses canvas and paint

Yamini presents a textile art show by women artisans of Kala Raksha Trust from July 18 to 20 at 11/2 Haudin Road, on Ulsoor Lake. The show is open from 10.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.

The women’s work expresses their experience of the importance of water in their lives. Their portrayals, artistically lyrical, compelling and amusing, recall the joys of nature, the satisfaction of good rains, the anxieties of wells going saline in their villages, the need to harvest water, and even the threat of industrialisation in Kutch, explain the organisers.

The women have used fabric and thread the way a painter uses canvas and paint. Kala Raksha Trust, a grassroots social enterprise, is dedicated to preservation of traditional arts.

Founded as an artisan initiative in 1993 in the desert region Kutch, it produces some of the most exquisitely hand-embroidered and patch worked products made in this region. On the average, 30 per cent of the price one pays for a Kala Raksha product goes to the artisan’s workmanship, say the organisers. Yamini can be contacted on 41134781.
