Former athlete Merlene Ottey Page won nine Olympic medals totally, the most by any woman in track and field history. These include three silver and six bronze medals. But despite being a world record holder she never managed to win a gold medal in any Olympics. She also won 14 World Championship medals.

Sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown, a four-time Olympic medallist, was born in Trelawny, Jamaica, has nine brothers and sisters. She attended Barton County Community College (Kansas), and set several records and also excelled in academics earning an Associates Degree.

Weightlifter Halil Mutlu (original name Huben Hubenov) is one of only four weightlifters to have won three consecutive gold medals at Olympic Games. He won five World Championships, nine European Championships and broke more than 20 world records. His name Mutlu means ’happy’ in Turkish.

Former British rowing champ Sir Stephen Redgrave won gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games from 1984 to 2000. He also won a bronze medal in 1988. His wife Ann Callaway was also an accomplished rower and represented Britain in the women’s eight at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.

U.S. sprinter Tyson Gay recently ran a sensational 100m final at the U.S. Olympic Trials and clocked an amazing albeit wind-aided 9.68 seconds. It was the fastest ever 100m-time under any conditions. However, a few days later he injured his leg and his participation in Beijing is now in jeopardy.
