Sharbani Mukherjee on playing the wife of Mohandas Gandhi

Saying she had never left the scene, and has been waiting for the right kind of movies, Sharbani Mukherjee was all excited a day before screening of her movie Mohandas — a Man Lost in His Own Nation at the OSEAN Film Festival. “My studies and my dancing did keep me a little busy,” accepted the honey-eyed actor adding, “I have diversified interests and with my family background, it’s an opportunity I am going to fully utilise.” So are we going to see Sharbani directing movies in the near future? “Yes! That’s most likely, I am very keen on directing.”
Talking of the role of Kasturi, wife of Mohandas, Sharbani recalled her first meeting with the director. “There was this photograph of an Afghan girl amongst his collections. Which he showed me and said, ‘This is what I am looking for in Kasturi.’ The pain in those eyes touched me. Other than that, the script reminded me of Smita Patil. I had to work hard at learning the lifestyle of the village women.”
At a personal level, Sharbani sounded concerned about Indian traditions, “There have been western influences on our culture that are evident at all levels. The movie however explores rural India where our sanskriti is alive. The Indian woman that I play is a strong woman who plays a vital role in the destiny of Mohandas.”
Her current claim to fame might seem to be that she is Rani Mukerji’s cousin. Sharbani Mukherjee however sees no point in comparisons with her cousin.
