Art idiom A work from the show
The paintings of the 11 artists at ‘Resurrection’, an exhibition of paintings at Durbar Hall Art Centre, is an intense expression of what can be termed urban angst. The exhibitions runs through July 23.
Juxtaposed are the human condition, the plunder of the environment and sometimes, refreshingly it is simply art for art’s sake. C. N. Karunkaran, K. K. Rajappan, Asanthan, Biju Kumar V. K., Mani Kakkara, Robert Lopez, P. R. Sathish, Shijo Jacob, Surendran P. K., Vijayagopal C. and Austin Konchira are the participants.
CNK’s painting is vintage CNK with the mythology in place the tones are the muted shades of murals, the theme is nature or rather the female aspect of nature. Asanthan’s work stands out for the highly individualistic and stylised symbols and the profusion of motifs borrowed from animism such as the bull and the bird. These have been interpreted in semantics unique to Asanthan’s palette. Then there are the works by K. K. Rajappan and Austin Konchira which are interesting in the themes and the treatment. Surendran’s works are trademark in terms of the vibrancy of the colours and the themes. Mani Kakkara’s paintings are faultlessly executed. One can almost see the moment that translated on the canvas. Is it dream, nostalgia or vision? Then there are the works by Robert Lopez, Shijo Jacob, Biju Kumar V. K. and P. R. Sathish which move out of the realm of the individual preoccupations to the metaphysical.
