Car and bike questions? We have the answers
|
I plan to buy a used car and my budget is Rs. 3 lakh. I have found 2004 models of Maruti Wagon R and Hyundai Santro with approximately 25,000 km on the clock. Or would it be better to go in for a new Tata Indica Xeta GLS 1.2?
Mitesh Surana
It is always better to buy a new car as it enjoys a warranty and is less likely to give you trouble. With a used car however, some parts will certainly need to be changed. During inspections, it is easy to overlook a possible expense which can throw up a nasty surprise later. We would say you go ahead and buy the Xeta 1.2, it’s a spacious and comfortable car but quality is inconsistent and you may face niggling issues. But at least you will have a warranty to bank on.
I have a Hyundai Santro which is a little more than two years old and would like to buy a second car for my wife. I have two options; retain the Santro and buy her a small car like an Alto or give her the Santro and buy myself a bigger car. I am ready to pay an EMI of up to Rs. 10,000. I travel a minimum of 45km per day by car, so I will require a fuel efficient and comfortable car with good boot space. Should I consider the Skoda Fabia or Hyundai Getz Prime? Are there any other alternatives?
Subodh S
We suggest you give your Santro to your wife. It is always best to give learning drivers a used car, the risk of minor accidents is higher with learners as they are still developing their judgment. You would feel terrible if a brand new Alto picked up a few scratches and dings! Also, the Santro with its high seating position is ideal for learners as they get a good view of the road. Why don’t you consider the base version of the Logan for yourself? It is very comfortable, has a massive boot and has decent fuel economy as well.
Which is a good car to buy in the Rs. 5 lakh range? I like the Getz Prime as it looks good. Is it a good car to drive as well? I want a reliable, good looking car that is cheap to run. What effect will wider tyres have on the car?
Vinod Singh
The Getz Prime is a spacious and comfortable hatchback. The 1.3 engine gives decent performance as well. It is a reliable car and spares are easily available. Alternatively, you could look at the Swift. It may not be built as well as the Getz and is not as spacious either, but offers better performance and fuel economyl. Wider tyres generally mean higher fuel consumption as there is more rolling resistance.
Honda City or Maruti SX4, which is a better choice? My requirements are performance, reliability, after sales service and good resale value.
Shaan
This is a close call indeed, but we think the Honda City is the one you should go for. Both these cars meet your requirements but the Honda scores higher in the reliability and resale value features. Besides, there is the quality feel to the Honda that the SX4 lacks. If performance is your main concern, go for the VTEC version of the City which comes with ABS and twin airbags.
