Five star paranthas

“Paranthewali gali” at New Delhi’s Jaypee Sidharth hotel

Reliving the zing of street food in the comfort of a five-star hotel in this humid weather is tempting enough. If you are ready to bite the idea, then read on to find a ready option.

Recreating Old Delhi’ s famed “Paranthewali gali” right in its international chain restaurant Eggspectations is JayPee Sidharth hotel in New Delhi’s Rajendra Place. According to Inder Pal Singh, the hotel’s food and beverage manager, the first day of the festival saw as many as 25 orders being placed for the paranthas which have sitafal ki sabzi, aloo bhaaji, raita and chutney as accompaniments. The paranthas are neatly placed in a thali, on a banana leaf with some pickles besides the accompaniments.

Papad parantha

Among the variety of paranthas, there is also a churchur papad parantha. Like the other paranthas, it also costs Rs.395 but what is interesting about it is its crushed papad stuffing. Having lost its crispiness and gained the flavour of garam masala, the papad stuffing actually gives competition to the traditional stuffing of aloo, gobhi, muli, dal, paneer and matar.

Interestingly, each parantha is made in that special ‘Paranthewali gali ka tawa’ – a deep frying pan – by a set of cooks specially hired from Old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area to bring that typical street taste we all crave for. The saunth – sweet tasting thick sauce with apples and pomegranate seeds – and the jeera raita that is also sweetened with little sugar, are smart accompaniments to the strangely spicy sabzi.

Says Inder Pal Singh, “Street food with the same taste but prepared under hygienic conditions maintaining the quality standards becomes an irresistible choice for the family dinners and those who come for the executive lunches as well. Not just the north Indians, others too want to try it.” The festival is on till this Saturday.
