Lecture Lawrence Liang will talk on cinema, censorship and law
The Bangalore Film Society in association with Deep Focus Film Quarterly presents a lecture and three films on the concept of film censorship. “The Commissar” will be screened on July 25 at 6.30 p.m.. This Russian film directed by Alexand
er Asoldov, tells the story of a courageous stand against the rigid ideology and prejudices of the State, a stand that would nearly wreck the fate of the film causing it to banned forever in its homeland. It was almost considered a lost masterpiece for 20 years till it was rescued and premiered to a terrific response and a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1988.
Lawrence Liang,a legal researcher and professor, will give a talk on cinema, censorship and law titled “Touch of Evil: the Legal Suspicion on Cinema” on July 26 at 6 p.m.
This would be followed by 68-minute Czechoslovakian film, “The Party and The Guests” directed by Jan Nemec. The story chronicles a party among friends that goes haywire.
On July 27 at 6.30 p.m., Brian De Palma’s “Redacted” will be screened. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film festival last year, takes a look at the Iraq war. The venue for this event is Ashirvad, 30, St. Mark’s Road Cross, opposite State Bank of India. Admission for the lecture is free while the film screening is only for members.
