Whip now

Inflation may seem natural and inevitable to a person who grew up in the United States. Accumulated over so many years, a 5 per cent annual inflation rate leads to an 18 fold increase in the price level. International data show an even broader range of inflation experiences.

The horrendous prices are a curse, only to the middle and lower middle class people. Inflation is “public enemy number one”. A middle class family cannot cook food at home for a six-member family with this sky rocketing inflation. Now slum dwellers in the city are living on hotel left overs that meet the requirements of their family.

They need at least Rs. 70 to 80 to prepare an ordinary meal at home for their family. To avoid these unavoidable expenses they borrow money for exorbitant interest rates and some times repay the loan on daily basis. If Government wants to win in next Parliamentary election, it should “whip inflation now”, in other words win.

S. GOPINATHAN,

Madurai.
