A transition well remembered

Sathyan is revelling in all his avatars in tinsel town

Sensible True to heart

Sathyan has been quick to switch gears. After playing hero in ‘Ilayavan’ and ‘Kanna Unnai Thedugiren,’ he realised his destiny lies elsewhere.

Nephew of veteran actor Sathyaraj, he took up the offer to play the hero’s friend in ‘Kovil.’ The role had good scope for humour and Sathyan did full justice to it. Later, ‘Mayavi’ and ‘Ghajini’ helped him establish as a comedian.

Memorable

But what takes even Sathyan by surprise is the reach of his role in ‘Mahanadigan’. “Frankly, I was in two minds doing the role. It just lasts for a scene. I played an aspiring director trying to impress the hero (Sathyaraj) through my storyline. That role won me a lot of recognition,” he says.

Sathyan feels playing a comedian is more difficult than that of a hero.

Difficult role

“I have done both in films. But the job of a humorist is pretty tough. More than dialogues, you need to have a good sense of timing to evoke laughter,” he explains.

He says that even if his two films as protagonist had done well at the box-office, he would have ended up as a comic hero.

“Though I am not very particular, still I am open to doing lead roles. But I would prefer subjects like what Pandiarajan did,” he adds.

Sathyan has acted alongside with most of the younger heroes in Kollywood and is all praise for their sense of humour.

“They are at their best when it comes to doing humour and that’s because of their flair for comedy. They are making our job much easier,” he says.

Best critic

He considers his uncle Sathyaraj as his best critic and gets useful tips from him often.

“He is very happy with my progress. As a youngster, I have got a lot to learn from him. His dedication towards work is amazing and that is one of his secrets of success in the highly competitive tinsel town,” he feels.

Sathyan says his performance in ‘Santosh Subramaniam’ was a satisfying effort and that the role has helped him get closer to the audience.

“It was an honour for me to do the character in the film that was played by veteran comedian Sunil in the Telugu version. I am happy that my performance has gone down well with the people,” he says.

Sathyan is at present busy working in ‘Aegan’ (with Ajith), ‘Padikathavan’ (Dhanush) and ‘Kantha’ (Karan). Seems the fans are in for a hearty laugh.
