FOOD BYTES

www.matablog.com

Here’s a blog about a girl who loves desserts. She used to be a chocoholic and has recently converted. She’s a vanilla girl now. She owns one hundred biscuit/cookie cutters, all of which are hardly ever used. She has a degree in food scie nce and nutrition, but still likes baking stuff that’s not good for her waistline. Or arteries, for that matter. Not surprisingly, she used to be a pastry chef apprentice. Even if it was for only 5 months. But baking isn’t her only love.

She’s also in love with a boy. Let’s call him Z. “I’m just your average, everyday kind of girl who simply likes to bake cake, play with her food and make it look pretty,” says this dedicated 22-year-old blogger from Melbourne. “I find it truly amazing that with a handful of simple ingredients, a bit of love and patience, you can produce something special as a cake for a birthday, biscuits to share over a cup of tea, or a delicious crumble for dessert.”

Butter, Sugar, Flour is — not surprisingly — delicious. It’s crammed with gorgeous photographs of her many successful kitchen experiments, all accompanied by meticulous, easy-to-follow recipes. Like her enthusiastic plug for roasted banana ice cream. “Let me just say that the following recipe is just deeee-licious..” she says, adding “I never thought roasting bananas would create such an intense flavour, but oh boy, it does. The best part of this ice-cream recipe is that there is no fiddly custard to make or even the need to whip up some cream. It’s just roasted bananas, full-cream milk, a bit of sugar, lemon juice and salt. That’s it! Give it a go and you can thank me later.”
