Away from the crowd The Kairali Ayurvedic Health Resort
Rejuvenation may have a different meaning in the dictionary, but in real life, one can feel the true sense only by experiencing it. We got a chance to do that this summer when I, along with my family, visited Kairali Ayurvedic Health Resort at Kodumb
u, nestled in Palakkad district of Kerala.
Living in Delhi, our daily life is action packed like many other middle class families, with both husband and wife working and separate needs of two school going children to be attended to. We have squeezed in holidays to many a hilly spot in North India, like Shimla, Mussoorie, Kullu, Manali, etc., during the children’s summer vacations. Still, we felt we were missing something that a real holiday should offer. So when a friend suggested the health resort, our expectations soared.
Just one hour drive from Coimbatore, and well connected with all important places of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, Kairali Resort is indeed well-located.
When we arrived at the resort in mid-May, almost all parts of India were reeling under a severe heat wave. Set amidst 50 acres of lush greenery, the resort took us to an altogether different world, far away from the peak summer elsewhere. Blending comfort with nature, the resort has 30 villas made according to Vaastu Shastra, surrounded by lush green trees and foliage of various herbs.
The resort offers Ayurvedic treatment for a number of ailments like arthritis, spondilytis, sinusitis and migraine, besides aiding weight loss, fighting post-pregnancy syndromes and everyday stress. It also has beauty and eye care therapies. Vegetarian food and abstinence from alcohol and smoking are strictly propagated. Also, the rare Valambiri conch is placed around each villa to augment a healing holistic environment. The result of all this is an assured gift for each guest — the power to face the stress and strain of everyday life. The experienced Dr. Chandrasekhar, under whose guidance we were given an Ayurvedic herbal massage depending on our health conditions, gave us great tips on how to lead a tension-free and healthy life. The well-equipped massage rooms equipped with “droni” (a wooden plank specially made for the massage), and traditional herbal oils manufactured by the resort at its own factory in Bangalore provide a really rejuvenating experience for the whole body by toning the muscles, improving blood circulation and removing toxins. The specialised massages at the resort include abhayanga (general massage), pizhichil, navarakizhi, talapotichil, khadikizhi, dhara, nasyam, netra dhara, among others. Then there are daily yoga and meditation sessions conducted by trained specialists. Besides, the sumptuous vegetarian food served to us at the resort was in a class of its own. We stayed there for eight days but none of the dishes was repeated.
At Kairali, they believe, improper nutrition is almost always the cause of physical illness. Only three-fourths of the stomach should be filled with food; the rest should be partly filled with water and some space should be left for digestion. The resort has its own vegetable garden, and vegetables and fruits come to the kitchen only from there. The resort also has recreation facilities like an amphitheatre for cultural programmes besides games like chess, monopoly and carom. It also has a swimming pool, a cycling ring and a badminton court. There is a spacious yoga room and a meditation hall, besides a conference hall, library and cyber centre. To know more about the resort you can visit its website www.kairali.com
