Artist Balan Nambiar will give a talk on the Bhuta ritual performing arts of Tulunadu
|
Bangalore International centre is presenting its fifth event in the “Airtel Manthan Arts & Culture Series” – an illustrated talk on “Myth, Spirit, Ritual: Bhuta Ritual Performing Arts of Tulunadu” by artist Balan Nambiar.
There are over 500 Bhutas, out of which nearly 60 of them are still performed in the village shrines, Bhutastanas. Dressed in elaborate, colourful costumes, with beautiful crafted masks, they get into a trance-like state and invoke divinity, and assume the roles of Bhutas. In this state, they bestow benedictions and blessings to the people of the village. Bhuta performers are experts in craftsmanship, choreography, singing, dancing and acting, apart from being men with occult and mystic powers.
Balan Nambiar is a painter, sculptor, enamellist, photographer, recipient of the national award for sculpture, given by the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. He is also a research scholar, who has researched and documented the ritual art forms of the west coast of south India, including the Teyyam of northern Kerala and the Bhuta of Tulunadu, over the past three decades, for which he was awarded the Nehru Fellowship.
The talk will be held at Bangalore International Centre auditorium, TERI Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur II Stage on August 2, 6.30 p.m. Call 25359680/ 25356589.
