Human rights in frames
Konangal Film Society jointly with People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Coimbatore and Breakthrough, an international human rights organisation, New Delhi, will hold a two-day human rights film festival titled ‘Human rights in frames’ on August 2 and 3 at Ashwin Hospital Auditorium from 5 p.m to 9 p.m. The aim of the festival is to sensitise the public on the issues concerning equality, justice and dignity. R. Damodaran, Special Public Prosecutor, SC/ST (PA Act), Coimbatore, will inaugurate the festival. Alika Khosla, associate director of Breakthrough will also take part. Human rights scholars and activists will participate in the post screening deliberations.
The festival will screen ‘Independent Intervention’, an award-winning documentary about the U.S Media coverage of the war in Iraq, ‘It’s always late for freedom’, directed by Mehrdad Oskouei which depicts the life of three teenager boys in Tehran House of Correction, ‘The Women’s Kingdom’, a documentary on the last matriarchal societies in the world, Mosuo women, who live beyond the strictures of mainstream Chinese culture and ‘I Want to Be a Pilot’, a moving film about a poverty stricken boy in one of the poorest parts of Kenya who looks up towards the heavens and dreams of being an airline pilot. The other films include ‘Leila Khaled Hijacker’ and a documentary on ‘The Hands of Che Guevara’, directed by Peter De Kock.
