Exemptions
The announcement of power cuts and a power holiday by the State Minister of Power has at least put at rest a raging controversy over the past few months on the power situation in Tamil Nadu. With the shortage pegged at 1000 MW, there is absolutely no option available to the Government than to go in for some harsh decisions.
Despite the critical situation, it is heartening that hospitals and dairy units have been exempted from the cut and there will not be any disruption in supply between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The main reason for the present situation is lack of attention paid by successive governments over the years to power generation and the manifold increase in consumption of electricity. People should also cooperate by saving electricity and one way of doing it is to desist from purchasing costly and power consuming gadgets for their homes. The State should compensate the industrial units which will feel the pinch due to this power holiday by coming out with other concessions.
