Stardom smiles on Jai

Actor Jai on how he landed the hero’s role in “Subramaniapuram”
|
How the entry of a girl into the lives of five friends changes their jovial relationship forms the background of “Subramaniapuram”, an unusual film set in a village in the 1980s. The ‘non-starry’ film has become a runaway success and catapulted its hero Jai to stardom. After making his debut in the Vijay-starrer “Bhagavathy” five years ago, and acting in the recent “Chennai 28”, Jai has got a big break with “Subramaniapuram”. Talking about how he landed the role, the actor says, “The director, Sasi Kumar, saw me at music director Deva’s place, and said I had a good smile. When he mentioned Ameer was producing the film, I said I did not even want to listen to the script. I straightaway agreed to play the lead role.” The audience has stated that the movie was a little too violent to watch, but such statements do not perturb the actor.
The actor is also impressed with his director. “What I like about Sasi is his calmness. It was also the reason why I signed up for the film,” says Jai, after an interaction with listeners in the programme “Whatta Fun Morning” hosted by RJ Gopinath for Radio City. He is ecstatic about the way the film has been received by his peers. “Ajith called to congratulate me on my performance as well as the success of the film. Vijay was all praise for me and was happy that collections for the film were pouring in. Director Bala called me to appreciate my work. Simbu was in awe of the film,” says a visibly happy Jai.
He is the nephew of music director Deva; but, he says, this does not influence his career. The actor has three films under his belt now, including one for Gayathri Pushkar of “Oram Po” fame.
