Off-road thrills

The third edition of the annual off-roading event, the Palar Challenge, is all set to hit the sands from August 14 to 17. The event, conducted by Jeep Thrills Chennai for Four-Wheel Drive (4x4) enthusiasts on the Palar river bed, is a real test for man and machine.

The terrain ranges from sandy and rocky to super slushy, muddy, and messy. Vehicles have to navigate sand, water, dunes and boulders. The two-day event will use the Adventure Zone campsite at Maduranthakam as base. The contests include challenges such as changing tyres without a tool-kit, extracting a Jeep from knee-deep slush, and timed runs. Anyone who owns a 4x4 (not restricted to Jeeps) or can lay their hands on one can sign up. Even if you don’t, you can book yourself a seat in one of the participating vehicles. Lecture-demonstrations will be given for everybody’s benefit, especially freshers. Route charts, food, accommodation, and other logistics will be taken care of. The fee is Rs. 2,600 per participant, and the venue is the Adventure Zone campsite.
