EXHIBITION Photographs of vintage Chennai on display at Taj Connemara from August 9

EVOKING NOSTALGIA One of photographs on view

The Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai presents, for the first time in India, a wide selection of photographs by Chennai photographers and German nationals Wiele & Klein (Later: Wiele, Klein & Peyerl) at Wallajah Room, Taj Connemara f rom August 9 to 20. The photos were printed from glass plate negatives from the year 1885 till (approx.) 1920. They have survived for almost a century and today form the Vintage Vignette collection, kept in Chennai. In the late 19th Century (around 1885), the two German photographers, E.U.F Wiele and Theodor Klein, opened a photo studio on Mount Road in Madras. It soon became one of the most famous photographic studios in South India. Wiele & Klein advanced to be the official photographers of the British Governor of Madras and their work was much appreciated by the Indian nobility. Their photos of different people, buildings, landscapes, royalty and social and religious festivities in Madras and South India were published in national newspapers and magazines and printed on postcards. Thus Wiele & Klein photos transported impressions from India to faraway places all over the world. The pictures allow glimpses into times gone by, and evoke memories of life in Madras, Tamil Nadu and India. The exhibition titled “Colonial India in the Photographs of Wiele and Klein will also be on display at DakshinaChitra from September 7 to 28.
