Donning different roles

R. Sundarrajan has moved from behind the camera to the front with much ease

Dedicated Successful career

R. Sundarrajan directed one of Rajnikanth’s super hits, ‘Rajadhi Raja,’ a couple of decades ago. Now, he has worked again with the superstar in ‘Kuselan,’ this time as an actor.

“The attraction is always more for any role in a Rajni film. I have done what I do in other films — living up to the expectations of the director,” he says.

After wielding the megaphone for a string of hits, Sundarrajan decided to take up acting because he finds it a “low-tension job”. Unlike the present trend of directors turning heroes, 90’s saw many successful directors evincing interest in doing comedian roles. Sundarrajan was one among them and without doubt, raised good laughs in films.

Comic roles

“It is not easy to do comic roles. One needs to have a good sense of humour and timing. I am happy that my efforts have gone down well with the audience,” he says.

Sundarrajan has directed 18 films, which include super hits ‘Payanangal Mudivathillai,’ ‘Vaidehi Kathirunthal,’ ‘Amman Kovil Kizhakale,’ to name a few.

Sundarrajan’s directorial venture, Sathyaraj-starrer ‘Thirumathi Pazhanichamy,’ also marked his debut as an actor.

Sundarrajan always aims at giving his best in whatever he does.

It is no surprise that his journey as an actor has also been eventful.

“Success or failure of a film has greater influence on the director and hero. Its impact on a comedian is minimal and hence I am able work without pressure. And that helps me to give my best,” he says.

Comfortable

Does he regret his decision of taking up acting a bit late in his career?

“For many in the industry, to become a director is a dream. I am happy to have donned the role to the best of my abilities. I could have turned actor much before, but it is pretty difficult to play the twin role of an actor and director. I think it’s better late than never,” he smiles.
