Jawaharlal Nehru University Campus

THE HANGOUT the canteen behind the library (it’s popularly known as the Dholpuri House, as it is occupied by civil service aspirants). Come out through the back door to reach this place.

RUSH HOUR lunch hours can be crazy, the library regulars especially throng the place more often than others.

What’s to love

It is perhaps one of the most interesting places to eat out in the campus, something which has a lot to do with its location. The huge boulders outside the canteen act as a natural seating area, while the wild trees and bushes behind the rocks give the spot a very rugged look. The vast open area in and around the canteen ensure that you breathe enough fresh air. What bring students to the canteen is its food and comfortable chair and table seating. “The samosas are especially nice and the nimbu pani tastes great,” says Shilpita, a summer trainee at the School of Environmental Sciences. “We can sit and relax here completely, either inside or on the rocks outside. Since the canteen has many fans, it is a nice place to sit in summers. The service here is just fantastic and very fast. You will get your masala dosa in just less than five minutes,” says Priyam.

The canteen, sometimes called the Library Dhaba, stocks a variety of cool drinks, chips, chocolates and snack items. “There’s rarely a brand he doesn’t have,” adds Shilpita.

What’s not to be

It may be the perfect place to relax with friends but do make space for man’s best friend as well. Yes, you find dogs in plenty roaming about freely — strolling next to your table or even under it. Though they seem pretty harmless, if you suffer from dog phobia then it is better to find another place.

“Not only dogs, we have enough flies and insects for company. Sometimes, the place is so crowded that we have to play musical chairs to get a seat,” says Anu. “The place could have been better maintained,” feels Priyam.

Alternatives

There’s no dearth of dhabas or canteens within the campus. One is only spoilt for choice.
