Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I own a 1995 Maruti 800. Till now I have experienced no specific problems. I am now planning to buy a new car. Good mileage, easy maintenance and fuel economy are the priorities. I think the Hyundai i10 is a good car. Please mention its price and technical specifications.

K Ramnath

Yes, the i10 would be a good car to upgrade to. It is well-built and will offer good service in the long run. Here are the technical details: engine size -1086cc, 66bhp; wheelbase - 2380mm; fuel tank capacity - 35 litres and tyre size -155/80 R13.

My budget is between Rs. 4 and 4.5 lakh (on-road, Bangalore). My preferences are comfortable seats, good legroom, fuel economy, an air-conditioner, power windows, low maintenance costs and good after-sales service. I have short-listed Mahindra-Renault Logan, Hyundai i10, Maruti Suzuki Swift and Chevy Aveo U-VA. Will they fit into my budget and fulfil my requirements? Is there a car not in the list that I should consider?

G D Deepak

Your list includes a saloon and a few hatchbacks that are quite different, and each has its own attributes. If you are looking at space and comfort above everything else then the Logan is the best. However, it won’t be as economical to run as a Swift or an i10. My advice is that if you need a family car then go for the Logan and if you don’t need all that space then the Swift is the best of the lot.

Could you point out the pluses and minuses of the Indica Xeta GLX /GLS, Getz Prime 1.3 and Wagon R? I have chosen these for ease of driving, rear seat legroom, boot space, fuel efficiency, refinement, AC, and reasonable spares and maintenance costs. I will be driving the car myself and intend to keep it for more than five years. My monthly usage is approximately 500-1000km in the city. Is there any other model I should consider? I also would like to know if I can get an automatic gearbox and airbags in the models specified.

Mohan K

The Getz Prime should meet your requirements best as it is a good city car, with lots of space and a generous boot that is much bigger than the Indica or Wagon R. It feels the most refined of all and is quite reliable too. The Getz has the best build quality of the lot, which you should consider as you will be using it for at least five years.

I am unable to decide whether to buy a diesel or a petrol car. I drive about 10km on weekdays and about 60km during weekends. What are the advantages and disadvantages of diesel and petrol for my driving requirements?

Sumant M

Looking at the advantages of diesel over petrol, 10km a day and 60km on weekends just doesn’t justify the extra premium you pay when you buy a diesel car. It will take you several years to recover the cost. Stick to a petrol car, which is reasonably efficient and a delight to drive.
