Drama in real life

A chance to learn acting with theatre professionals

“Theatre is the breeding ground for all else.” “Don’t depend on star power — Aamir can’t do 50 shows.” “Barry John hasn’t yet got citizenship from this country.” These were a few insightful and delightful remarks heard when veteran actor Manoj Bajpai came to Delhi to promote serious theatre. Manoj was in town to support “Chameleon Actor” a method-acting workshop by the Actor Factor Theatre Company, a Saket-based theatre group. The workshop, scheduled for August 17 to 31 at Lok Kal Manch, is the brainchild of Sunit Sinha, Founder, AFTC . It will be conducted by seasoned actor Vineet Kumar and his team of alumni from the National School of Drama including N.K. Sharma (founder, Act One) and Vipin Sharma (of Taare Zameen Par fame).

“AFTC is a 16-month-old theatre group, which was started by a handful of working professionals. The group essentially focuses on serious theatre that never fails to entertain the crowd. Some of our past performances include plays like ‘Aakar’, ‘Circus 2007 A.D.’ and ‘The Red Collet’,” Sinha elaborated. “This workshop will be a guide to all those actors who want to train themselves in method acting.”

Commenting on the state of theatre in the country, Bajpai pointed out that theatre in the country was unsuccessful in inviting and retaining new talent. Besides being a low paying medium, it also lacked creative backroom talent like playwrights and producers. “There are not enough people,” he sighed. However, Bajpai himself seemed to be caught off-guard when asked if he plans to come back to act in a play — though he was quick to respond that he was working on it. He also suggested an NSD for every state and invited his corporate friends to follow Mahindra and Harsh-Prithvi’s example and start investing in theatre.

He also asked the media to take up the cause of theatre more as activists than just as writers. “When I was acting, theatre was never written about. Whenever we saw a one-off article we would show it to everybody. I believe theatre in this county can easily match up to the standards of Broadway. The intention and the quality is there but we don’t have an audience,” he remarked. “An audience should come to witness this purest art form as all of us in theatre know theatre doesn’t invite limitations.”

The workshop, priced at Rs.6000 is open to all aspiring actors including working professionals.
