Well executed but…

The script had everything going for it in terms of potential. After all, one couldn’t really ask for a headier combination than President Bush and ambitious young Indians willing to do anything to meet him. And yet, the play failed to deliver. Why?

As I left the auditorium, I heard someone say in the foyer that the play lost steam in the second half. I thought this was a fair comment. Post-interval, the play seemed laboured and fatigued. The rather abrupt elimination of the candidates in quick succession probably provided an indication of this and the seeming loss of direction.

The more serious problem with the play was that it failed to deliver the punch that can only come when everything falls in place in terms of execution. It is much like a cricket match where team performance is critical. Unfortunately, “The President....” fell short on all counts and one could not help feeling that it was an opportunity lost.

In the midst of all this, there were some bright spots. The play had a lively start and the first half was absorbing for the most part. The use of the two chairs on either side of the stage to let the characters talk about themselves worked extremely well.
