USE SPARINGLY Too many products can damage hair
Those drugstore shelves loaded with bottles and jars of mousses, gels, pomades, hairsprays and fixatives are so enticing, aren’t they?
It seems like a new product is being introduced every week — which means something new to buy and try.
Just as you most likely have an array of shoes to choose from for work, play, casual and special occasions, you may also have a vast array of products suitable for different hairstyles and occasions.
But just as you wouldn’t wear more than one pair of shoes at a time, you shouldn’t apply too many hair products simultaneously. A lot of people pile on hair products because they’re trying to transform their locks into something they aren’t. “If I use styling balm my curls will lie flat” or “Another palmful or two of texturising gel and I’ll have ringlets for sure”.
Sometimes we even use products to try to make hair behave, when what we actually need is a new haircut!
Styling products are to enhance the style, make the most of your natural asset and not to ruin it.
Requiring too much of a setting aid at one time means a bad cut or the need for a new cut.
So, if you’re loading your hair with too many of them, stop at once or they’ll make your hair dull and lifeless as the residue of these styling products and two-in-one shampoo formulation (shampoo with conditioner) left on the hair shaft combines with mineral deposits in the water to form a build-up.
This also works as a barrier preventing chemicals from penetrating the hair shaft further making perm, colour and rebonding a difficult task. The colour can be patchy and the perm/rebonding can come out uneven.
If you’re into using too many styling products start using a good, branded clarifying shampoo. Let your hair breathe.
Start using one of the stripping, chelating or clarifying shampoos available in the market, once a week and try not to use more than one styling product at a time. See what you need at the moment and minimise the quantity.
You can also consult your hairstylist for a hair cut suitable to your hair type and texture.
Ask him to work on your natural parting and natural stream of hair, so that you could keep styling products at bay.
